Lemmus lemmus is a European variety of the lemming with a
fascinating story. Most rodents become relatively celibate when
food supplies dwindle in order to avoid starvation from
overpopulation. But not the lemming. Lemmings will continue
mating until their numbers become enormous. About once every
three to five years, they produce so many offspring that they
run out of food and have to migrate to find more. They gather
together in a huge caravan in search of sustenance, and
eventually reach the edge of the sea. Fortunately, they are
swimmers, so they hop into the water en mass in hope of finding
food on the other side. Unfortunately, they aren’t good enough
swimmers to span the ocean, and the vast majority of them
drown. But the lucky few who survive now have plenty of food,
and continue to mate like crazy. So remember the lemming, who
would rather drown than stop having sex.
